Days like this...

So, it's not that today was particularly bad or good. Today was just today. But, I've spent the better part of today reflecting on some things... immersing my mind in some stuff (rather than in my work). For me, workdays are usually like this anyway.

So...Diane. She's sharp, a nice dresser, cordial and professional and funny too. Just an all around awesome chick. Our association with each other began about a year ago. I think she's a wonderful person, and I enjoy the little time we spend together. Diane lives in Cleveland which might as well be a planet and a half away from me. We made due with seeing each other for drinks, dinner and laughter up until recently.

Yes. Something's changed. Diane has finally made a friend in her immediate area. Carrie is about 10 minutes away from Diane. The two of them can meet after work on a daily basis if they wanted to. Which leaves me and the idea of driving 30 miles for drinks, in the cold. Keep in mind, it's not as if things have been said to me about this prospect. This is just me reading the writing on the wall (if you'll pardon the cliche). *sigh* She's the only friend I've made in over a year's time and I'm pretty sure things are going to be washed out soon. :(

Mr. Reaper, bring me a drink...

Two past weekends ago we went out to Connecticut for Sonny's best friend's wedding. It was supposed to be a week long orgy of budget hotels, late-morning sleep-ins and a little NY fun on the side. It was in reality a horrible week long nightmare.

Leaving Ohio wasn't bad at all. The sky was a bit gray but no rain as we drove out east. By the time we stopped in the middle of Pennsylvania, Sonny had covered half the ground we needed to in order to reach NY. The next day I drove, and made it as far as I-95 in New Jersey before fate stepped in. I was in the fast lane, doing a couple mph over the speed limit. We cut through the driving rain, smiling to ourselves, sure that NY would be a blast. Suddenly, I was hydroplaning in a bad way: off to the left so that the car was going closer to the cement wall on my left. I jerked the wheel, turning it madly to the right. It took a bit before we were out of the water and in the right lane...but once we were I realized that I'd over compensated and tried to get out of the right lane. But it was too late. I think it went like this:

The ass of the car struck the metal guardrail along the right lane and pushed us off into a wild twirl of 360 donuts across the highway. The car was perfectly content to twirl and twirl, until it crashed nose-first into the cement wall along the left lane. And then it stopped. By now the air bags have deployed and there's a thick, putrid smell of gunsmoke in the car. The air is thick with a cloud of something and Sonny wonders aloud if maybe we should get out of the car. So I put on my flip flops and we exit the car. We realized the crash ended across two lanes of traffic and here we were, unhurt. Our car (the engine had still be running) coasted forward after we hit the wall and took us into the right lane, allowing jaded commuters to continue on their merry ways. Only one SUV stopped for us, and believe me, they were NOT from NY.

The upshot? We're fine. The car was totaled and Sonny got a nice piece of change to replace it, but the crash sapped our energy, busted Sonny's lip and burned my arm. Our NY vacation was ruined. Not to mention the fact that it continued to rain, and rain, and rain. It didn't stop until we were on our way HOME to Ohio. *pouts*
